Instagram video formats, explained

A quick glossary for anyone who's ever wondered what the difference actually is.

Reels

Short, vertical videos - up to 90 seconds - built for Instagram's algorithm-driven Explore and Reels tabs. Links look like instagram.com/reel/<id>. DPViewer downloads Reels at their original resolution, not a re-compressed preview.

Feed video posts

Standard video posts that show up in a profile's grid and in followers' feeds. They can be square, portrait, or landscape, and run from a few seconds up to several minutes. Links use instagram.com/p/<id>.

Carousel posts

A single post containing up to 10 photos and videos a viewer swipes through. If a carousel includes a video, paste the same /p/<id> link and DPViewer fetches the video slide.

IGTV (legacy)

IGTV was Instagram's long-form video section, launched in 2018. Instagram folded it back into regular video posts in 2022, so no new IGTV uploads exist - but old instagram.com/tv/<id> links still resolve, and DPViewer can still fetch them.

Stories

Photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours unless saved to a profile Highlight. Stories aren't addressable by a public link the way Reels and posts are, so an anonymous, no-login tool like DPViewer can't reach them.

Live videos

Live broadcasts stream in real time and, once ended, are only available as a replay to followers inside the app for a limited window - they're never exposed as a standalone public link.

Why people download Instagram videos

A few common, legitimate reasons people use a tool like this:

  • -Creators backing up their own work. Instagram doesn't offer a built-in way to export your Reels and posts in bulk, so many creators keep a personal archive of what they've published.
  • -Watching offline. A flight, a commute with no signal, or a limited data plan - saving a video first means you're not stuck with a spinner.
  • -Repurposing content you have rights to. Marketers and editors often need the source file of a brand's own Reel to cut into a different format, rather than screen-recording it.
  • -Research, journalism, and citation. Public posts get cited, embedded, or archived for reporting and academic work - a stable local copy avoids relying on a link that might later be deleted.
  • -Saving tutorials and how-tos. How-to content disappears from a feed fast - saving the clip means it's still there weeks later.

Whatever the reason, the content still belongs to its creator. See our copyright policy for details.

Documentation

The details behind how a download actually works.

What links work

Any public link that points at a video:

  • A Reel link - instagram.com/reel/<id>
  • A video post link - instagram.com/p/<id>

What "HD" actually means

DPViewer requests the same source video file Instagram serves in the app - not a re-compressed copy - so quality matches what you'd see watching it natively.

Public posts only

DPViewer only reads what a post already shares with anyone who visits it. If an account is private, we can't and won't pull its video - that's the account owner's call, not ours.

Fair use

The creator still owns the video - only download content you have the rights to use, and please don't run automated bulk downloads against the tool.

Supported formats & resolutions

Every download is delivered as a standard .mp4 file (H.264 video, AAC audio) - the same format Instagram's own app uses, playable on virtually any phone, computer, or media player with no conversion. Resolution matches the original upload, typically 720p–1080p.

Works on any device

DPViewer runs entirely in the browser - no app, extension, or account. It works on desktop and mobile browsers alike (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge). On iOS, downloaded files typically save to the Files app or Photos, depending on your settings.

Questions people actually ask

Is DPViewer affiliated with Instagram?

No. DPViewer is an independent tool and isn't affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Instagram or Meta.

Can I download videos from a private account?

No. DPViewer only works on public posts - private accounts stay private, that's between the account and its followers.

Do I need to log in to Instagram?

No. Paste a public Reel or video post link and DPViewer fetches it anonymously, the same way viewing it in a browser would.

Do you store the videos I download?

No. Nothing is saved on our servers - each download is fetched fresh and discarded once you're done.

Is DPViewer free to use?

Yes, downloading a public video is free.

Can I download someone else's video and repost it?

Only download content you have the rights to use. The creator still owns the video - this tool just saves a copy for personal use.

What video formats and resolutions does DPViewer support?

Any Reel or feed video post, delivered as a standard MP4 at its original resolution - usually 720p to 1080p. Legacy IGTV links still work too.

Can I download Instagram Stories?

No. Stories aren't available at a public link the way Reels and posts are, so an anonymous, no-login tool like DPViewer can't reach them.

Is there a limit to how long a video can be?

No hard limit on our end - DPViewer fetches whatever length Instagram serves for that post, from a few seconds up to Instagram's own maximum.

Does DPViewer work on mobile phones?

Yes. It runs in your phone's browser, no app required. On iOS, downloaded videos typically save to the Files app; on Android, to your Downloads folder.

Why did my download fail or say "video not found"?

The most common causes are a private account, a deleted post, or a link copied incorrectly. Double-check that the link opens directly in a browser first.
