Signing up for a Business or Creator account is a one-tap decision early on; realizing you don't actually need Insights, contact buttons, or ad tools is a much more common second thought. The good news is switching back to a plain Personal account is just as quick, fully reversible, and doesn't touch your followers, posts, or username at all.
Why people switch back to Personal
- No real use for analytics or Insights day to day.
- Want the public contact button and category label gone from the bio.
- Not running ads from this particular account.
- Prefer the simpler, more private default Instagram experience.
- Consolidating accounts, keeping only one Business or Creator profile elsewhere.
Before you switch: what changes
- Insights disappear. You stop collecting new analytics the moment you switch, and existing historical Insights become inaccessible while the account is Personal.
- Contact buttons and category label are removed from your bio - no more Email, Call, or Directions buttons, and no business category tag under your name.
- Active ad campaigns block the switch. Instagram generally won't let you change account type while a campaign tied to the account is still running - it needs to be paused or completed first.
- Any linked Facebook Page is unlinked from the account.
- Branded content tools and partnership labels become unavailable while Personal.
- Nothing about your content is touched. Your posts, follower count, following count, and username all stay exactly as they are.
Switching on iPhone or Android
-
01
Open Settings
Go to your profile, tap the ≡ menu in the top corner, and open Settings and privacy.
-
02
Find account type
Tap Account type and tools (labeled just Account on some app versions).
-
03
Switch account type
Tap Switch account type, then choose Switch to Personal Account and confirm.
Switching on desktop
- Go to instagram.com and log in, then open your profile menu and choose Settings.
- Look for Account type and tools in the sidebar.
- If the full switch flow isn't available in the desktop layout on your account, open the Instagram app on your phone to complete the last confirmation step - desktop settings occasionally lag behind the app for account-type changes.
Can you switch back to Business or Creator later?
Yes, any time, with no waiting period in the vast majority of cases. The path is the same menu: Account type and tools > Switch account type > Switch to Professional Account, then pick Creator or Business again, re-add your category and any contact info, and re-link a Facebook Page if you want one. There's no penalty for switching back and forth, and your followers are never affected either direction.
When the option won't tap (grayed out)
- An ad campaign is still active or scheduled. Pause or finish it in Meta Ads Manager / Business Suite, then try again.
- The account has a pending review or restriction. Resolve any flagged-content notice or verification request first - Instagram blocks account-type changes during an open review.
- The app is out of date. Update Instagram from the App Store or Play Store and retry; older versions sometimes hide or break this flow.
- You're logged in as an added role, not the owner. On a Business account managed by multiple people, only the primary account owner can change the account type - a manager or editor role can't.
Quick answers
Will I lose followers if I switch to Personal? No - followers, following, and posts are completely unaffected by the account type.
Do I need to unlink Facebook first? No, you don't need to manually unlink anything beforehand - any existing Page link is automatically set aside as part of the switch.
Does switching change my username or profile picture? No. Only the account type and the features tied to it (Insights, contact buttons, category label) change - your identity on the app stays exactly the same.
One more thing
After switching, it’s worth double-checking your profile photo still displays the way you expect — view it at full resolution with DPViewer.
