Changing your Instagram DP takes under a minute once you know where the setting lives - the tricky part is usually picking a photo that still looks sharp once it's squeezed into that tiny circle. Here's the full walkthrough, plus fixes for when the change doesn't seem to save.
In this guide
On iPhone or Android
- Open the Instagram app and tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner to go to your profile.
- Tap your current profile picture (or the small "+" badge on it, depending on your app version).
- Choose New Profile Picture.
- Pick Upload Photo to choose one from your camera roll, or use one of the automatic options if you'd rather not upload your own - some versions offer a Facebook profile photo import, an AI-generated avatar, or your initials in a colored circle.
- Drag to reposition and pinch to zoom until the crop looks right, then tap Done (Android) or the checkmark (iPhone).
On desktop
- Go to instagram.com and log in, then click your profile icon in the top-right corner and select your profile.
- Click directly on your current profile picture.
- Select Upload Photo and choose an image from your computer.
- Adjust the crop position, then click Save.
The desktop site has fewer of the fun extras (no AI avatars or camera capture), but it's the most reliable option if you already have the exact file you want to use sitting on your computer.
Choosing a photo that stays sharp
Since Instagram displays your DP as a small circle (around 110px on mobile, 180px on desktop), detail gets lost fast. A few habits make a real difference:
- Upload square, and upload big. Aim for at least 1080×1080 pixels - see our full breakdown of Instagram's recommended DP dimensions for the exact numbers.
- Center what matters. The circular crop trims the corners of your square image, so keep faces or logos in the middle third of the frame.
- Keep it simple. Bold shapes and strong contrast read clearly at a glance; fine detail and small text just turn to mush at display size.
Removing your profile picture
If you'd rather go back to the default silhouette:
- Tap your current profile picture the same way you would to change it.
- Look for Remove Current Photo in the options that appear.
- Confirm - your profile reverts to Instagram's default placeholder icon.
When it won't update
Uploaded a new photo but still seeing the old one? This is almost always a caching issue, not a failed upload. A few things to try, in order:
- Force-close and reopen the app. This clears the locally cached version Instagram is still showing you.
- Check from another device or a friend's account. If the new photo shows up there, it did save - your own device is just holding onto a stale cached copy.
- Wait a few minutes. Instagram's content delivery network occasionally takes a short while to propagate the change everywhere it's displayed (feed, DMs, Stories tray).
- Check your connection. A weak connection during upload can silently fail the save - try again on stronger Wi-Fi if the problem persists.
Good to know
Once your new DP is live, you can double-check exactly how it looks to everyone else — at full resolution, not the small in-app circle — using DPViewer.
